My blog "Gray's Ferry Grapevine" is written for many reasons. The first reason is my dedication to an area of Philadelphia that is frequently short changed and decried as an "urban" hotspot. This has not always been the case. Gray's Ferry has always been a prominent place in American history, from William Penn, to the American Revolution, to the Industrial Revolution...up to the modern age. Important chapters of American inventions, lifestyle and innovative contributions can be directly linked to this multilayered and multicultural section of Philadelphia. Many places claim that, George Washington slept here, Jefferson ate here and Franklin well...was Franklin here. Gray's Ferry can truly claim all of these characters as well as many others.Growing up in "Gray's Ferry" in the 1960's and 1970's did not always afford a good look at the areas rich history and diversity. It was more like Herbert Spencer's Principles of Biology 1864...survival of the fittest. Hopefully my writings will provide some trivial but yet enlightening insight into a long and colorful area where American history...quite literally was made. Most of the works quoted here are taken from my book, "Gray's Ferry, the Crossroads of the American Dream". I hope to publish the work shortly...but until then...exerpts will be "blogged away". Finally my site offers knowledge and hope to individuals in this historical area. They need to understand and develop a strong comprehension of their historical, "roots", and apply this understanding to the development of the common good for everyone.
